Fashion is a reflection of the culture, and within the microclimate of the Berlin fashion scene we see a manifestation of Germany’s polarised nature. During Berlin Fashion Week AW24 (5-8th February) we saw both ends of the spectrum, from outrageous and unapologetic statements with fantastically diverse casts to more conservative and careful collections presented on casts of almost entirely tall, skinny, cisgender, white models.

The studio only takes up half the room but the energy radiating from it fills up every corner. It is most concentrated around the four individuals that are huddled on the couch and chairs in their puffy winter coats and whose creativity and passion has brought Afrobodega to life.

Nalin Satearrujikanon based in Bangkok, Thailand, is using her creativity and personal experiences to create space for individual expression. She doesn’t want herself or for her peers to fit into one specific box. Nalin is a model, photographer, designer, street caster and party organizer. With her work in both fashion and art she is using different mediums to support and highlight the queer community in Bangkok.

Word travels fast. It condenses worlds of meaning. Although language can approximate a culture’s progress—it can also measure points of regression. Case in point, five Filipinos talk about the terms and conditions that shaped their self-image. By challenging definitions of identity from forced assimilation, they’re setting a new future in motion.

The young generation is challenging the current rules of beauty standards; celebrating individuals and their uniqueness. But at what pace is the model industry following up? We talked to three emerging agents and casting directors, from different communities, who all share a mission of authentic inclusivity in the fashion industry. From fulfilling moments to difficulties they face in the industry, and their hopesand vision for the future, they all have a personal and individual approach to scouting and representation.
